Center for Environmental Surveillance and Zoonoses

The Center for Environmental Surveillance and Zoonoses is an agency attached to the Department of Health, whose duties are focused on monitoring and reducing health risks to the population. We operate through the prevention and control of environmental risk factors biological and non-biological that interfere with human health.

Our team consists of high level technicians (veterinarians, biologists, and Zootechnician Biochemical) and midlevel (Agents of Environmental Health, administrative, laboratory technician and typists). Thus, the Center for Environmental Surveillance and Zoonoses Health Secretary John Person has been planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating policies to control biological and non-biological risks that interfere with human health, developing the following programs:

  1. RODENT CONTROL PROGRAM / LEPTOSPIROSIS;
  2. PROGRAM OF RABIES CONTROL / PREVENTION OF ACCIDENTS
  3. CONTROL PROGRAM FOR URBAN farms;
  4. PROGRAM schistosomiasis control;
  5. DENGUE CONTROL PROGRAM;
  6. CONTROL PROGRAM visceral leishmaniasis;
  7. AMA CONTROL AND VENOMOUS synanthropic animals;
  8. CONTROL PROGRAM OF WATER QUALITY FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION;
  9. INFORMATION, EDUCATION AND COMMUNICATION IN HEALTH.

How to apply for these services?
In all the programs mentioned, there is a protocol of action which is determined by the Ministry of Health, however, maintain close contact with the population because it can also be signaling situations that offer health risks. In the case of leptospirosis, beyond the areas of risk that are monitored, we serve the population (inspection for guidance and, if necessary, application of rodenticide) when requested. It is noteworthy that is NOT part of our assignments control "quaint" inside homes. Our work is focused on areas with poor infrastructure conditions (garbage collection, sewage, drainage etc.).

The Program of anger and accident prevention is also accomplished from a technical protocol. The population can help us by providing information on dogs, cats, bats that have "strange" behavior. Aggressive animals or aversion to light and noise, animals that die suddenly, roadkill, dead bats or invade homes with flights incordenados must be collected by the Environmental Surveillance for conducting rabies diagnosis.

In addition to vaccination campaigns carried out annually, the CVAZ offer to rabies vaccine in their yields (8 to 12/14 to 17 pm).
Animals that are abandoned by their owners and showing healthy behavior, exposes the CVAZ for adoption. To motivate the population to this practice, we also promote trade shares. The control of leishmaniasis is done by searching for dogs reagents. For this, we have a team that makes the collection of blood from dogs in areas of higher risk and also we offer this service in CVAZ the aforementioned time. We perform about 600 exoames / month.

When they show a positive result, are removed from homes and sent to euthanasia. Leishmaniasis in dogs has no cure and even the animal without showing symptoms remains infecting humans or other animals.
The control of flebotomínios (mosquito leishmaniasis) is carried out in areas where the presence of the vector was confirmed by laboratory identification and capture. The job of cleaning the environment is also essential for the results of the work.
