  • Mini Resume: Prof.. Dr. Marcio Jose dos Santos holds a degree in Physical Therapy from the State University of Londrina (UEL), Londrina, Pr, Brazil. He obtained a Master's degree in Physiology from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Campinas, SP, Brazil. Before joining the PhD, Dr. Marcio Santos worked several years as a physiotherapist responsible for two major physical therapy clinics in Brazil. In these activities, he has acquired extensive experience in clinical physical therapy treatment of patients with orthopedic and neurological disorders and as an administrator. He also worked several years as a professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, University of Ribeirão Preto (UNAERP), Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil. Dr. Marcio Santos obtained his doctorate (Ph.D.) in Rehabilitation Sciences at the Department of Physical Therapy, University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC), Kansas City, KS, USA. Also in the U.S., he worked for two years as a postdoctoral associate at the Knecht Movement Science Laboratory of the Department of Physical Therapy, University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), Chicago, IL, USA. Currently, Dr. Marcio Santos is a tenured professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, University of Santa Catarina (UDESC). He is also accredited as a teacher and supervisor at the Master's program in Human Movement Sciences at the Center for Health Sciences and Sports (CEFID) UDESC. His main research involves: 1) the control of posture in the two aspects of adjustment of postural muscle activities against disturbances of posture: "feedforward" and "feedback" and 2) the control of grip forces in healthy subjects and in patients with orthopedic and neurological diseases.

  • Professor. Dr. Stella Maris Michaelsen
  • Mini Resume: Professor Stella Maris Michaelsen graduated in Physiotherapy from the Federal University of Santa Maria - RS. Obtained the Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA) in Biomechanics and Physiology of Movement at the University of Paris XI in France. Before joining the PhD, Dr Stella Michaelsen worked as a physiotherapist at the Hospital das Clinicas de Porto Alegre acting in Physical Therapy in Neurology, particularly in the Adult Rehabilitation Neurofunctional. He earned his doctorate (PhD) in Biomedical Sciences with an option in Rehabilitation at the University of Montreal in Canada. During his doctorate he worked in the laboratory of Motor Control at the Rehabilitation Institute of Montreal. He is currently Professor of Neurological Physiotherapy discipline of physical therapy degree from the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC). It is also a teacher of discipline Motor Control and guiding teacher of the Masters in Human Movement Sciences at the Center for Health Sciences and Sports (CEFID) UDESC. His main research involves: 1) the effect of environmental constraints or task in coordinating travel and other mobility tasks (like lifting from sitting and going up / down stairs) and 2) evaluation of the upper and effect of different approaches treatment in order to recover the function of persons with paresis.
