David Shrigley on his memorial for Michael Jackson's monkey Bubbles house in Munich

August 27, 2013 – 14:25

Conference Recap: 5th Annual Maddie s® Shelter Medicine Conference

The Glasgow artist David Shrigley has "as part of the art project / Hopefully Public A Space Called Public "by Elmgreen & Dragset in Munich erected a memorial to the chimpanzee Bubbles, the former pet of Michael Jackson. Therefore took Shringley, which have mostly been naive for his , cartoon-like drawings were known, the statue of Maximilian II Emanuel, or which the base and decorated it with photos and drawings, letters and fan art for Bubbles.

With age, the chimp had become increasingly aggressive until Jackson transferred him to a shelter for your old Hollywood primates in California and then almost forgot. Bubbles now lives - or possibly one of the Bubbles - the Center for Great Apes in Florida, as we explained Shringley.

The location of the memorial is not a coincidence, because right next to it have Fans of Michael Jackson ready to cover the base of a statue with other souvenirs flowers and various other memorabilia for the pop star. Nor is this the debut of Bubbles in contemporary art, but it already appears in the famous "Michael Jackson and Bubbles" (1988) by Jeff Koons.

Shrigley spoke with ARTINFO Germany on overcoming sensationalism of these things, the development of "space bubble" and the subtle but heartfelt difference between this and his other, more sarcastic work.

How did your interest in Bubbles?

Well, Ingar [Dragset] and Michael [Elmgreen] asked me for a contribution. I wanted to do something fairly site-specific, which would be different from my previous work. Then I learned of this memorial for Michael Jackson, something I would not expect in Munich, which is pretty overloaded. This memorial appropriated the statue of the Flemish Renaissance composer Orlando di Lasso in front of the Hotel Bayerischer Hof in which Michael Jackson once stayed. That was probably the only clue for the fans to make it a memorial [Jackson]. There's this whole cheesy fan art and flowers and candles on [the base] of the statue. Shortly after Jackson's death that was pretty exuberant, but it still exists, and someone cares. When I saw that, I started thinking about Bubbles and wondered what became of him. I researched and found out that he is still alive, namely in Florida at a shelter called "Center for Great Apes."

He was brought there after Jackson's death executed or already some time ago?

Chimpanzees are usually quite aggressive when they grow up, and sent him to Michael Jackson [first] to a place in the San Fernando Valley [in southern California]. There is not cared for him very well, there was just a guy who cares about all these ape that no longer needs Hollywood. Bubbles apparently gave Michael Jackson is not in his will - very sad, I think. This location [in Florida] is basically a charitable organization that was built for all these chimps - have been abandoned - mostly from the entertainment industry. The maintenance costs annually a million dollars because there are 30 to 40 apes that are cared for around the clock, makes $ 20, 000 per year and ape. And that's the point here: I wanted to create something like a memorial for Bubbles.
